Getting started, answered
The questions everyone asks before their first drift day.
How do I start drifting in the UK?
Book a public drift day or an open practice session at a venue that runs them, like Santa Pod, Driftland or a circuit track day. You drive your own car, there is space to make mistakes safely, and nobody expects you to be any good on day one. Start with the days listed above under "days you can book and drive" rather than turning up at a competition round.
How much does a UK drift day cost?
Expect roughly £130 to £150 for a driver on a public drift day or an own-car drift track day, based on what organisers are currently charging. Spectating is far cheaper, often under £20. Prices move and early-booking rates usually close a week or two before the event, so check the organiser link before you budget.
Do I need a special car to drift?
No. Most people start in a standard rear-wheel-drive car, and plenty of first drift days happen in something cheap and unmodified. A limited-slip differential makes it far easier to learn, but it is not a requirement to book a day. What matters more is that the car is mechanically sound and you accept it will wear tyres.
What do I need to bring to a drift day?
Requirements vary by venue, so treat the organiser as the authority. Most will want a valid driving licence, a helmet to a current standard, and a car that passes a basic noise and safety check. Bring more tyres than you think you need, basic tools, and fluids. Always read the specific event regulations before you travel.
Where can I drift legally in the UK?
Only at a licensed venue running an organised event: circuits, drift-specific tracks and private land under an event permit. Drifting on public roads is illegal, uninsured and gets people hurt. Every event on this page is run on a proper surface with barriers, run-off and marshals.
Can I just come and watch a drift event?
Yes. Competition rounds are built for spectators and are a good way to see whether the sport is for you before spending anything on your own car. Practice and public drift days are driver-focused and are not always set up for crowds, so check with the organiser first.
